Committee Members: Brothers Peter Conroy (Chairman), Dr. Patrick Kerr, Dr. Hugh Love, Henry Thompson, Curtis Young, Paolo Glaude

Mission: To promote the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and wellness of our chapter, Harlem, and the broader communities which we serve.

NYA’s Health and Wellness Committee has had a strong and productive start to the 2021-22 fraternal year, hosting a variety of events once per month. In August, we partnered with many health organizations and Brother Stephan McKinney’s Greater Calvary Baptist Church to host a series of six Health Fairs in Harlem. The chapter has earned nearly $5,000 through the NYC Vaccine Referral program and we can earn an additional $15,000 by simply getting people to mention NYA when they get their first COVID vaccination at a NYC approved site.

For September, which is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, NYA hosted a virtual seminar with Dr. Shaakir Hasan from the New York Proton Center. The big take away? If you are 40 years or older, you should get your PSA level checked the next time you get bloodwork. For October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we partnered with the Kappa Sigma Chapter of SGRho to raise $2,386 at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Central Park (see picture). In November, which is Diabetes Awareness Month, we hosted another virtual seminar, this time with Dr. Peter Goulden, Chief of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Mount Sinai. People should be screened for the disease if they are overweight and have one or more risk factors. We learned that one of the best ways to reduce the risk of Diabetes, even more effective than drug therapy, is to incorporate 150 minutes of weekly exercise into your lifestyle. Building off this advice, the Committee has created a “21 Days Til Fitmass” exercise regimen for December designed to shed 5 to 10 pounds between the December 4th Chapter Meeting and Christmas.

Health and Wellness has exciting plans for January and February. On Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 17th, 2022, NYA is once again spearheading a panhellenic Day of Service at Nassau Coliseum. From 11 AM to 1 PM, we will be executing a variety of health and social action initiatives, there will be a step-show competition at 1 PM, and then the basketball game between the Long Island Nets and the Boston Celtics from 2 PM to 5 PM with a DJ and step-show halftime performance. Tickets are only $25 with portions of the proceeds going to NYA.

January is also National Blood Donor Month. With the blood supply in NYC at critically low levels, NYA is partnering with the NY Blood Center to host a Blood Drive at the Kappa Kastle on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022, from Noon to 6 PM.

February is American Heart Month and NYA will partner with the American Heart Association by wearing Paraphernalia on the AHA’s Wear Red Day on Friday, February 4th, 2022, and hosting Red Party that evening at Brother Tony Martinez’s Havana Club private room. Tax-deductible tickets are only $25 for this charitable benefit and include free food and guest DJ (see flyer below).
